Open Vertical Hand Block Part One

In lesson seven, Sensei Jon demonstrates how to perform a vertical open hand block (Tate Shuto Uke.) This technique is used to parry an attack such as a straight punch. Tate Shuto Uke works by diverting the attack into the void using very little strength.  In this lesson you will learn the fundamentals that make Tate Shuto Uke.

• Practice with feet shoulder width apart

• Keep your shoulders relaxed

• Keep your back straight

• Ensure when the hands are open fingers are together

• Make sure feet are facing forwards
